Tietiesbaai was engulfed in in a thick fog that rolled in from the sea. I had arrived just before dark and set up camp on an isolated beach. Cold, ghostly twirls of fog, accompanied by the eerie screams of unseen seagulls, created an ideal setting for a supernatural visitation. Every few minutes the foghorn of the Cape Columbine lighthouse, only a few hundred yards away, reverberated through my skull as it gave warning of possible disaster and mayhem. The only other campers, Eldred and Linda, pitched camp right next to me for mutual moral support. That evening, while our flickering fire kept the encroaching darkness at bay, we refrained from telling ghost stories. Oh yes, I did manage to tick a few Grey Tits in Tietiesbaai.
