Oukaimeden, a ski resort in the Atlas Mountains, was the next place to target Alpine birds. This entailed eight hours of driving up and down winding mountain passes, although Tacheddirt and Oukaimeden is less than 20km apart as the crow flies. At Oukaimeden we searched a nearby mountain stream for the White-throated Dipper, but to no avail. Hiking up a mountain path we found a Peregrine Falcon inspecting the sheer mountain cliffs, as well as numerous Red-billed Choughs and African Crimson-winged Finches. On the way back to Tacheddirt we came across some Common Wood Pigeons sunning themselves in a tree and a Short-toed Treecreeper in a pine forest. It was with great thankfulness that we reached our accommodation before dark and I realised I had survived the Atlas roads without too many incidents.
