Having dipped on the Kirk’s Francolin, Mpingwe Camp compensated in good views of Eastern Nicator and Little Sparrowhawk, both new birds for the Year List. Near Inhamitanga Maans showed me where Naill Perrins and himself were ambushed by bandits in 2017, Naill receiving a flesh wound by an AK 47 bullet as a lasting reminder of the unpredictability of Africa. Along the road I was happy to find Vanga Flycatcher, a new Southern African lifer.

Maans is well-acquainted with the forest birds of Mozambique as he regularly guides birding tours in the area. We searched a few forest areas before one of the dark forest patches of the Coutadas delivered the East Coast Akalat and White-chested Alethe. While walking back to Daai Dêng we found Little Greenbul and Black-headed Apalis in the forest fringes. These were all new Southern African lifers, bringing my Southern African life-list to 825 species. While celebrating with the Mandela shuffle, two White-headed Vultures flew past – a perfect birding day in Africa!
