Bridge Crossing Kasungu

Kasungu, a National Park bordering Zambia, was a convenient stop between birding hotspots. We camped on the shores of a dam and watched a herd of elephants drinking water in the setting sun. Dinner was chicken and chips at the camp’s restaurant, and the beer was cold and refreshing after the day’s heat. The birds we encountered were the usual suspects usually found on the shores of dams, with the one exception of a pair of Red-necked Spurfowl looking for seeds in the dust. During dinner we heard the familiar call of I’ll Drink Your Beer; I’ll Drink Your Beer of Rufous-throated Francolin - recently split from Shelley’s Francolin, as well as the typical African sound of a Fish Eagle calling at dusk. That night, quite uncharacteristically, we were not troubled by wild animals.
